AGRARPROJEKT-PRIDES PROJEKT IN NIGERIA

„Great farmers – great nation! No farmers – no nation!“ is the famous slogan of farmers. It’s also a powerful motivational message, especially since the government pays little or no attention to agriculture.

Hunger and malnutrition are a typical problem in developing countries, despite significant increases in productivity and successful efforts to combat famine. The reason for this is that agriculture is unable to provide the rapidly growing population with sufficient quantities of food.

The agricultural project “Promoting Rural Integrated Development by Empowering Smallholder Farmers (PRIDES)” with the local partner organization “Otitoloju Ibadan Airport Farmers Association” aims to promote the adoption of new and improved climate-smart agricultural practices. The project helps farmers adopt new technologies and gain access to better seeds. This intervention will contribute to improving the income and yields of the 30 selected smallholder farmers in “Ona Ara” Local Government Area of Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria. In addition, the smallholder farmers will have easy access to suppliers of hybrid seeds and mixes for their farms and they will also be able to sell their crops directly without intermediaries. These factors will increase both farmers’ incomes and food availability in the community.

The project will contribute to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals Part 2 “Zero Hunger” “Sustainable Development Goals 2”, namely to end hunger in all its forms by 2030.

The project runs from July 15, 2024, to January 14, 2025. The project is funded by the WP Schmidt Foundation, Düsseldorf, and the Interkulturelles Haus Saar e. V., with the local partner organization Otitoloju Ibadan Airport Farmers Association in the Ona-Ara community in Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria.
